Like most cities York has many people who are homeless, vulnerable, struggling with drug and alcohol addictions and are experiencing exclusion by society. We are fortunate in York to have one of the best services for people who are homeless in the country. The Salvation Army, Arc Light, Peasholme and York City council among others work closely together to do their best to help people move out of homelessness and in to some form of housing and support.
We have a range of opportunities for people to get involved with helping and supporting people in these situations and sharing the hope that we have in Jesus with them.
Most recently we have been volunteering with Carecent. Carecent is an ecumenical centre for all homeless, unemployed or disadvantaged members of our community. In conjunction with other agencies, it is Carecent’s aim to seek ways of moving people forward to an improved lifestyle. In order to achieve this, they provide food, clothing and fellowship in a clean and friendly environment. Volunteer staff are always ready to listen and offer help and advice.
Carecent is open to all, regardless of background, age or gender, six mornings a week – Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 10.45am.
